During March of 2021, my family decided to take a road trip to Texas from Illinois. Our route happened to take us through Memphis and Alabama. So, on the way down we stopped at numerous museums and memorials. When visiting these places, all I could think about was leaving and meeting my cousins and friends. I didn’t take in the information and really experience the places I went to.
Then in March 2022, I got the opportunity to do the Civil Rights Trail as part of my Project Week in school. I came back to these same places a full year later for my class trip. When I came back visiting and learning the exact same things, I all of a sudden loved and enjoyed it. At that time I didn’t understand or question why I enjoyed it now and not before. But later I was doing some thinking and I narrowed it down to a few. It could have been the change in environment, my maturation, or visiting these places with my friends. I now understand that it is all three. The change in environment was the biggest part.
On my first trip I was with my family. All I could think about was when I was leaving and coming home. However, during my trip in March 2022, I enjoyed experiencing the same places with my friends. We would have conversations about what we saw and I felt learning was fun! This made me relaize that I am a visual and kinesthetic learner who really enjoys learning with a larger group of people.
