This article is hands down my favorite one so far. This article has a ton of information on this topic and provides a lot of sources and data that back up their point. This research focused on the opinion of adolescents instead of adults. Since the new generation is rising and are the ones who are predominantly playing video games. In one study, “on average, eighth and ninth grade girls play video games about five hours a week, and boys at the same age play, on average, 13 hours a week” (Gentile et al. 2004). Those numbers are outrageous throughout the school year. Since the majority of popular video games are aggressive, the more hours spent the more aggressive the user gets. These types of games mess with the user and can make them more violent. This is where racial stereotypes and prejudices come in. When some users are upset they take it out on teammates or others. Data shows that if the people they take it out on are not a straight white male they will have a little prejudice towards that group of people. The more violent they get, the harsher the prejudice becomes. These types of aggressive gamers also tend to stereotype others and categorize them based on similarities and differences. Gender stereotypes are also a very big part of gaming. “It has been demonstrated that most video games contain negatively stereotyped gender images (Dietz 1998; Dill et al. 2005), such as portrayals of males in dominant roles and as overly masculine violent heroes, and of females in submissive, sexually exploitive roles—as busty, brainless, victims of aggression (Provenzo 2000).” A lot of games such as GTA, sleeping dogs, and many more single player video games portray women as sluts and just a sexual role. Since the main characters in some of these video games are not supportive of LGBTQIA+, the audience tends to pick up these prejudices. In multiplayer video games that are violent, women are not portrayed like this and women are able to play as a regular main character. In most battle royale games, playing as a male or female is just cosmetic for their skin. In some games you are able to make your own character, which I personally believe is the best, to an extent.
