I decided to write a book for kids about online bullying because it’s such an important and pervasive issue facing young people today. With social media and digital devices being such a big part of kids’ lives from an early age, online bullying has sadly become extremely common. Kids are being harassed, humiliated, and tormented through texts, social posts, private messages, and online forums. I’ve heard and witnessed so many heartbreaking stories of the severe emotional toll this takes on children and teens. Online bullying makes kids feel anxious, depressed, isolated, and afraid.
Friends I have known have even become suicidal. It interferes with their learning and social development. And many suffer in silence, not knowing how to deal with the abuse. I felt compelled to write a book to help kids understand online bullying – what it looks like, how it impacts victims, and most importantly, what they can do about it if it happens to them or someone they know. Kids need to know how to respond, who to turn to for help, and what steps to take. They need to know they aren’t alone and it’s not their fault.
My goal with this book is to empower kids with knowledge and strategies to recognize online bullying, stand up to it, report it, and get support. I think one of the biggest lessons was that the digital footprint serves an important role in tracing the bully. Everyone thinks they are anonymous, but they don’t realize that they can be tracked. If this book helps even one child cope with online bullying, it will have been worth writing. Our kids deserve to feel safe and respected in online spaces.
