Did you know that “Dear Colleague” letters are often used to encourage others to cosponsor, support, or oppose a bill. “Dear Colleague” letters concerning a bill or resolution generally include a description of the legislation or other subject matter along with a reason or reasons for support or opposition?
A “Dear Colleague” letter is a formal communication sent by a member of Congress to their fellow legislators, typically used to encourage support, co-sponsorship, or opposition to a specific bill or issue, essentially aiming to influence their colleagues’ votes on a matter by outlining the reasons behind the desired action; it can also be used to inform colleagues about new procedures or events related to congressional business.
As part of my internship with Congressman Danny K Davis, he requested me to write a “Dear Colleague” letter to get support for the bill, H.R.8494, that was introduced into Congress on May 22, 2024. He requested me to use the research I had done on the Park Districts to gain support for this bill to help bridge the Digital Divide through free Wi-Fi in local parks.
