My experience presenting at several national conferences

As I stand before the audience, my heart races, and a nervous energy courses through me. At just 16, I’m delivering my research at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology’s national conference, an event attended by over 4,000 scholars, many of whom are seasoned professionals in the field. The scale of the gathering is daunting, but I remind myself that this is a unique opportunity to share my work.

I’m presenting findings from a three-year study I conducted while still in high school. The research centers around racial biases and stereotypes in online spaces, based on a survey I administered to 500 participants. The study was completed under the guidance of Dr. Reyna at DePaul University’s Social and Intergroup Perceptions Lab. To my surprise, the audience is engaged and genuinely curious, asking insightful questions and showing enthusiasm for my work. Their interest is a powerful affirmation of the time and effort I poured into this project.

The response from the conference attendees not only validates my research but also sparks a deeper passion within me for the field of sociology. It gives me the courage to pursue my academic goals with greater determination. In the months following this presentation, I would go on to present at additional conferences, including the Midwest Psychology Association and Ecological Community Psychology conferences, where I continued to refine my presentation skills and expand my understanding of the subject.

This experience taught me the value of pushing beyond my comfort zone and taking risks, even when they seem intimidating. It demonstrated that real growth comes from seizing opportunities, no matter how daunting they may seem at first. Presenting at such a prestigious conference reinforced my desire to pursue research that can contribute meaningfully to the understanding of social issues, and I’m eager to continue exploring the complexities of human behavior and societal challenges in the years to come.rom seizing opportunities, no matter how daunting they may seem at first.
